D.O.T. Physicals

What is a D.O.T. Physical?

A D.O.T. physical is a health examination mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. A D.O.T. physical helps determine if a driver is physically, mentally and emotionally fit to operate a CMV.

If you’re a driver, you’ll typically need a D.O.T. physical every two years to stay qualified to drive a CMV. You could need exams more frequently based on your medical history. If you meet medical standards, you’ll receive your medical examiner certificate.

Preparing For Your Exam

  • Gather your medical history/records

    • Your medical history includes all diagnoses, procedures, surgeries, medications, and any past or present symptoms you’re experiencing. Calling your primary healthcare provider and/or utilizing your electronic health record to retrieve your health history will be necessary. This information will assist in filling out the health history section of the exam forms.

  • Download required exam report forms

    • Filling out the required medical examination forms before your arrival will assist in making your visit as smoothly timed as possible. For example, filling out the checklists and sections on the first two pages, such as list that asks about past diagnoses or symptoms.

  • Complete extra forms if necessary

    • If you’re a driver that has certain medical conditions, there are other forms that are required in addition to your medical examination report. In order to avoid certification delays as much as possible, these will need to be filled out and signed by your primary healthcare provider. It’s best done prior to your D.O.T. physical examination, as they’ll be needed to complete your exam and receive your certification.

    • Specific medical conditions can include: Diabetes (insulin & non insulin), CPAP use (for sleep apnea), vision problems, and certain medications (like coumadin).
